For wireless network users:
We strongly recommend that you update the firmware using a wired LAN or USB connection. Updating the firmware using a wireless LAN connection may fail if the connection becomes unstable.
Notes when updating the firmware:
Please make sure that the machine you are going to update the firmware is not busy. Also, make sure that there is no data left in the machine memory when running the firmware update tool.
For MFC-9440CN/ 9450CDN/ 9840CDW only:
*Network configuration may be deleted when updating the Firmware
(Before updating the firmware, we recommend that you print the Printer settings page. After the firmware has been updated, please reconfigure the network settings. If you have problem printing documents with your machine, please turn the machine OFF and then back ON, and try to print again.)
The following data will be deleted when you update the firmware.
Please check the following before updating the firmware.
Please check the following on your computer.
- Open Printer Properties and confirm that your printer is functioning correctly by printing a test page.
- Please close all applications and TSR's.
- If you are using a Windows XP SP2 Firewall or other Firewall software, disable it.
It is not possible to update the firmware if the following conditions are met on your machine.

FAX receive data exists in the memory of the machine.For instructions on how to check your memory is clear, please refer to the 'User's Guide'.

FAX send data exists in the memory of the machine (timer sending job or retry job).
- The machine is calling or dialing FAX.

The machine is scanning a document.

The machine is copying / or in copy settings (copy mode, number of copies, etc..).
- The machine is in the Settings Menu.

The telephone line is busy. (Disconnect your telephone line to prevent any incoming calls.)

There's error message on LCD panel.
Please do not turn off the machine until firmware update finishes.
How to download and update the firmware
If you see the following error message "Program failed to run", click here to learn how to solve the problem.
Notes:
- You must be logged on as an Administrator.
- If the "User Account Control" prompt is displayed, click "Continue"/ "Yes”.
Note: The button may differ depending on the operating system being used.
[When the machine is connected to the PC via USB]

Please make a temporary directory on your HDD to save the downloaded file. e.g. C:\bront

Start downloading.

Once downloading is completed, make sure that the machine is connected to the PC with a USB cable.

Double click the downloaded file.

The update will start.
The machine will Beep to let you know that the Firmware is being updated.

When the "Successfully Completed" message is displayed, click 'Done'.
After updating the firmware, make sure you perform the print calibration to ensure that all the latest improvements are effective. To see how to perform the print calibration, click here.
[When the machine is connected to the network]

Start downloading.

Once downloading is completed, double click the downloaded file.

The update will start.
The machine will Beep to let you know that the Firmware is being updated.

If the updating process stops at 80% and you see the message "No Response...", click 'OK'. Then please check the version of the firmware on the machine.

If the firmware version of your machine is the latest, update is complete. If the firmware version of your machine is NOT the latest, please try updating the firmware again.

If you have other machines connected to the network, you can update the firmware on these machines by clicking 'Continue' and selecting the model you would like to update the firmware.
