Network Firmware/Windows® 2000
Network Firmware
How to Download and Install
Before upgrading the firmware:
- We STRONGLY recommend that you make a note of the current Print server configuration before you upgrade. To do this, Print out a configuration page by referring to the Quick Setup Guide that was supplied with the printer for details on how to print a configuration page.
- After sending the firmware to the printer, do not turn off the printer until after the printer has performed an automatic restart. If the printer does not perform an automatic restart within five minutes after completing the firmware data transfer, then recycle the printer power by removing the power cable waiting five seconds and then reconnect the power cable to manually restart the printer.
(A) Using BRAdmin Professional software
- Start BRAdmin.
- Highlight the appropriate Print server. Then select the Control menu and choose Load Firmware. You can select more than one Print server by pressing CTRL+<select> on each additional Print server.
- There are two possible ways of sending the new firmware data to the Print server. For whichever method you select, you must enter a password for the Print server. The default password for the Print server is "access".
(1) TFTP PUT from this host
Use this method if you have TCP/IP already installed on your PC. BRAdmin will use the TFTP protocol to send the new firmware data to the Print server.
(2) TFTP GET from a server
If you have a TFTP server installed in your network (many Unix systems provide TFTP support), you may wish to use this option. The new firmware file must be located in the TFTP BOOT directory on your TFTP server. In this case, your PC makes the Print server read the firmware data from the assigned TFTP server. If you do not provide the correct file name, then the upgrade will fail. You must also ensure that the firmware file is set so that the Print server can read the file. On Unix systems you can use the chmod command to specify file attributes. For example, chmod filename 666 allows the firmware data to be accessed by anyone. Also make sure that the TFTP service is running on your Unix server.
(B) Using FTP protocol from command prompt
The administrator password must be configured properly in your printer before upgrading the firmware using the following method.
In this example, the filename of the new firmware is "64_111b.blf" and it is placed in D:\ (root). The IP address of the printer (NC-6400h embedded) is 220.0.250.200. The print server password is "access".
D:\>ftp ftp> open 220.0.250.200 Connected to 220.0.250.200 220 FTP print service:V-1.05/Use the network password for the ID if updating. User (220.0.250.200:(none)): access 230 User access logged in. ftp> bin 200 Ready command OK. ftp> hash Hash mark printing on ftp: (2048 bytes/hash mark) . ftp> send 64_111b.blf 200 Ready command OK. 150 Transfer Start ###################################################### ###################################################### ###################################################### ###################################################### 226 Data Transfer OK/Entering FirmWareUpdate mode. ftp: 1662339 bytes sent in 10.94 Seconds 104.74Kbytes/sec. |
- When you see "226 Data Transfer OK/Entering FirmWareUpdate mode." You can be sure that the firmware file is being transferred to the Print server. If you do not see this message, the file you are sending to the printer will either be ignored or the printer will print garbage.
- You must use the "bin" command to put the FTP client into Binary communications mode. If you do not specify the bin command the upgrade process will not function correctly.

- After sending the firmware file, the printer will start programming the print server. The status LED of the printer will be blinking red during the programming. Do not turn the power of the printer off while this is happening. The printer will re-start automatically after the programming process.

- After sending the firmware file, the printer will start programming the print server. While programming, do not turn the printer off. The printer will re-start automatically after the programming process is completed, and the message "Complete" will appear on the LCD.
