Scan images directly from my Brother machine to a USB Flash memory drive.

Description:

You can use your Brother machine to scan both black and white and color documents directly to a USB Flash memory drive.


  • Black and white documents will be stored in PDF (*.PDF) or TIFF (*.TIF) file formats.

  • Color and grayscale documents may be stored in PDF (*.PDF), Secure PDF (*.PDF), XPS (*.XPS), or JPEG (*.JPG) file formats.

  • The default file names are based on the date that you have programmed into your Brother machine.

    For example, the fifth image scanned on July 1st, 2010 would be named 07011005.PDF.

  • You can change the color, quality, or file name.

Scanning directly to a USB Flash memory drive

  1. Insert a USB Flash memory drive into the appropriate slot on the Brother machine.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Place the document you want to scan in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) face up, top edge first.

    • Place the document you want to scan face down on the flat scanner glass.

  3. Press the SCAN key to illuminate it.

  4. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Scan to USB.

  5. Press the OK key.

  6. Do one of the following:

    • To start scanning with the existing settings, follow these steps:

      1. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Start Scan.

      2. Press the OK key.

      3. Go to STEP 13.

    • To change the settings, follow these steps:

      1. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Change Setting.

      2. Press the OK key.

      3. Go to STEP 7.

  7. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to change the resolution.

    You can choose Color 100 dpi, Color 200 dpi, Color 300 dpi, Color 600 dpi, Gray 100 dpi, Gray 200 dpi, Gray 300 dpi, B&W 200 dpi, or B&W 200x100 dpi.

  8. Press the OK key.

  9. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose the file type you want to use.

    • If you are scanning in color or grayscale, you can choose PDF, Secure PDF, JPEG, or XPS.

    • If you are scanning in black & white, you can choose PDF, Secure PDF, or TIFF.

Note

If you choose Secure PDF, the machine will ask you to enter a 4-digit password using numbers 1-9 before it starts scanning.
  1. Press the OK key.

  2. The file name is set automatically, but you can change the first six digits of the name.

    Do one of the following:

    • To use the default file name, go to STEP 12.

    • Use the dial pad to enter a new file name.

  3. Press the OK key.

  4. Press the Black (Mono) Start or Color (Colour) Start key to start scanning.

Note

The Black (Mono) Start and Color (Colour) Start keys do not affect your image quality settings.

Caution

The machine's LCD shows Scanning while reading the data. DO NOT unplug the power cord or remove the USB Flash memory drive from the machine while it is reading the data. If you do, you could lose your data or damage the USB Flash memory drive.


Changing the default file size

You can program your own default file size setting by following these steps:

  1. Press MENU and choose General Setup => Document Scan => File Size.

  2. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Color or Gray.

  3. Press the OK key.

  4. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose Middle, Large, or Small.

    For a higher-quality scan, choose Large.

  5. Press the OK key.

  6. Press the STOP/EXIT key.

Note

You cannot choose a file size when you scan a document in black and white. Black and white documents will be stored in TIFF format and their data will not be compressed.


Changing the default resolution and file type

To change the default resolution and file type, follow these steps:

  1. Press MENU and choose USB Direct I/F => Scan to USB => Resolution.

  2. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose a resolution.

    You can choose Color 100 dpi, Color 200 dpi, Color 300 dpi, Color 600 dpi, Gray 100 dpi, Gray 200 dpi, Gray 300 dpi, B&W 200 dpi, or B&W 200x100 dpi.

  3. Press the OK key.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If you chosen B&W, press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose PDF, Secure PDF, or TIFF.

    • If you chosen Color or Gray, press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to choose PDF, Secure PDF, JPEG, or XPS.

  5. Press the OK key.

  6. Press the STOP/EXIT key.


Changing the default file name

To change the default file name, follow these steps:

  1. Press MENU and choose USB Direct I/F => Scan to USB => File Name.

  2. Use the dial pad to enter a file name.

    • The file name can be up to six characters long.

    • You cannot use a space for the first character.

  3. Press the OK key.

  4. Press the STOP/EXIT key.


Understanding the error messages

Once you are familiar with the errors that can occur while you are using Scan to USB, you can easily identify and troubleshoot any problems.

  • Protected Device: This message will appear if the USB Flash memory drive's protect switch is on.

  • Rename the File: This message will appear if there is already a file on the USB Flash memory drive with the same name as the file you are trying to save.

  • Too Many Files: This message will appear if there are too many files stored on the USB Flash memory drive.

  • Unusable Device: This message will appear if the Brother machine does not support your USB Flash memory drive.
