Configure the Brother machine for a wireless network without a WLAN access point/router (Ad-hoc mode)

This FAQ explains how to connect your Brother machine to a wireless capable computer without a WLAN access point/router (Ad-hoc mode).

Note

If you use this connection method (Ad-hoc mode), please note that the level of network security is lower and the network performance is slower than with a WLAN access point/router.

STEP I : Configure the Brother machine for Ad-hoc mode

Please follow the steps below to configure your Brother machine.

Note

  • This section explains how to configure your Brother machine for a wireless network using the Wireless setup wizard and a USB cable temporarily.
  • The screens may differ depending on operating system being used and your Brother machine.
  1. Connect the AC power cord to your Brother machine and then connect it to an AC power outlet (electrical socket). Turn on your Brother machine.

    Caution

    DO NOT connect the USB cable yet.

  2. Turn on your computer.

  3. Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

    For Windows® users
    For Macintosh users

    Note

    If you do not have the CD-ROM:

    For Windows® users:
    Please go to Downloads section of this website and download Full Driver & Software Package. First, follow the installation instructions on the download page. Once the installation screen appears, follow the steps from Step d for Windows® users below.

    For Macintosh users:
    If you do not have the bundled CD-ROM, you cannot configure your machine for a wireless network in Ad-hoc mode. Please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us."


    For Windows® users:

    1. The opening screen will appear automatically. If prompted, choose your model and language.
      NOTE: If the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe.

    2. The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Click Install Printer Driver.

    3. Click Wireless Network users.

    4. Choose Wireless Setup and Driver Install (Recommended) and click Next. Continue to Step 4.

      NOTE: For Windows Vista® and Windows® 7 users, when the User Account Control screen appears, click Allow or Yes.

    For Macintosh users:

    1. Double-click the Start Here OSX icon. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine.

    2. Choose Wireless Network Connection and then click Next. Continue to Step 4.

  4. Choose Temporarily use a USB cable (Recommended) and then click Next.

  5. Confirm you have the wireless security information. Check the Checked and Confirmed box and click Next.

  6. Connect the USB cable to the Brother machine and your computer.

  7. Click Advanced.

  8. Check the This is an Ad-hoc network and there is no access point. box, and then enter the SSID name you like (up to 32 alphanumeric characters) into the Name (SSID) box. Click Next.

    Note

    • The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is a unique identifier to avoid interference on a wireless network. We recommend that you do not use the name which can be identified (e.g. your name, office name) as the SSID because anyone can see it easily.
    • Please record your SSID and Network key (WEP key) to be described in Step 7 to use them when configuring your computer for wireless network.

  9. Choose Open System from the Authentication Method pull-down list.
    Choose None or WEP from the Encryption Mode pull-down list.
    If you choose WEP, enter the Network key you like (5 or 13 alphanumeric characters) into the Network Key and Confirm Network Key boxes.

    Hint

    Encryption methods:

    • None: No encryption method is used.
    • WEP: By using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), the data is transmitted and received with a secure key.
  10. Confirm the settings are correct. Click Next to send the settings to the Brother machine.
    If you click Cancel, the settings will be disabled.

  11. Once the following screen appears, disconnect the USB cable from your computer and the Brother machine.

  12. If the following screen appears, the wireless setup of your Brother machine is now complete. But DO NOT click Next yet.

    At this point, the connection between your Brother machine and your computer has not been established. DO NOT click Next yet. Leave this screen as it is and go to the steps below to connect the computer to your Brother machine.

STEP II : Connect the computer to the Brother machine by wireless

After the wireless setup of your Brother machine has been completed, configure your computer for wireless network.

For Windows® XP users
For Windows Vista® users
For Windows® 7 users

For Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 users
For Mac OS X 10.6 or later users


Note

If you use wireless LAN card, the instructions may differ depending on your wireless LAN card being used. For more details, refer to the instructions provided with your wireless LAN card.



For Windows® XP users
  1. Click Start => Control Panel => Network Connections.
  2. Choose and right-click Wireless Network Connection. Click View Available Wireless Networks.
  3. You can see the SSID of the wireless device in the list. Choose the SSID you set in your Brother machine and click Connect.

    Note

    If the list is not displayed, please consult the wireless LAN card manufacturer. If you use the computer with a built-in wireless LAN feature, please consult the computer manufacturer.

  4. If you chose WEP in Encryption Mode when configured your Brother machine, the Network key entry screen will appear. Enter the key you set in your Brother machine and then click OK.

    If you chose None in Encryption Mode, you do not need this step.

    You have completed the wireless network setup.

  5. Next you need to install the driver. Even if you have printed with USB connection, you need to install the printer driver for network connection. Click Next on the screen of the step10 in STEP I to install the printer driver for network connection.


For Windows Vista® users
  1. Click Start => Connect To.
  2. You can see the SSID of the wireless device in the list. Choose the SSID you set in your Brother machine and click Connect.

    Note

    If the list is not displayed, please consult the wireless LAN card manufacturer. If you use the computer with a built-in wireless LAN feature, please consult the computer manufacturer.

  3. If you chose WEP in Encryption Mode when configured your Brother machine, the Network key entry screen will appear. Enter the key you set in your Brother machine and then click Connect.
    If you chose None in Encryption Mode, you do not need this step or later steps.

  4. If "Successfully connected to wireless" screen appears, click Close.

    You have completed the wireless network setup.

  5. Next you need to install the driver. Even if you have printed with USB connection, you need to install the printer driver for network connection. Click Next on the screen of the step10 in STEP I to install the printer driver for network connection.


For Windows® 7 users
  1. Click Start => Control Panel => Network and Internet.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click Connect to a network.

  4. You can see the SSID of the wireless device in the list. Choose the SSID you set in your Brother machine and click Connect.

    If the list is not displayed, please consult the wireless LAN card manufacturer. If you use the computer with a built-in wireless LAN feature, please consult the computer manufacturer.

  5. If you chose WEP in Encryption Mode when configured your Brother machine, the Network key entry screen will appear. Enter the key you set in your Brother machine and then click OK.

    If you chose None in Encryption Mode, you do not need this step.

  6. Next you need to install the driver. Even if you have printed with USB connection, you need to install the printer driver for network connection. Click Next on the screen of the step10 in STEP I to install the printer driver for network connection.


For Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 users
  1. Choose Applications from the Go menu.

  2. Open Internet Connect and click the AirPort in the tool bar.

  3. Choose the SSID you set in your Brother machine from the Network pull down menu. Enter the Network key you set in your Brother machine if required and then click OK.

  4. Next you need to install the driver. Even if you have printed with USB connection, you need to install the printer driver for network connection. Click Next on the screen of the step10 in STEP I to install the printer driver for network connection.


For Mac OS X 10.6 or later users
  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.

  3. Choose AirPort or Wi-Fi and then the SSID you set in your Brother machine from the Network Name pull down menu. Enter the Network key you set in your Brother machine if required and then click OK or Join.
