Title:
I receive an error message stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it" when I connect the Brother machine to a computer.

Description:

Note

This solution applies only to the specific error message: USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

The USB Device Not Recognized message indicates that there is a connection problem between the Brother machine and the computer. Complete the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

  1. Connect the cable to a different USB port on the computer to determine if the issue is with the computer's hardware.

    • Make sure that the Brother machine is directly connected to an available port on the computer.
If the cable is connected to a port on the front of the computer, move it to a port on the back. The front ports on many computers do not have sufficient power to connect with the Brother machine.

    Note

Do not use any hubs extension cables, laptop docking stations, or other pass-through devices.

If you still receive the error message, continue to the next step.

  2. Replace the USB cable to determine if there is a bad connection caused by the current USB cable. Ensure that the replacement cable is a type A to B USB cable with the recommended length of 2 meters (6 feet) or less. If you still receive the error message, continue to the next step.

  3. Disconnect the USB cable from the Brother machine.
  4. Power off the Brother machine for approximately 1 minute and then power the machine back on.
  5. Reconnect the USB cable to the Brother machine to determine if the issue resolved. If you still receive the error message, continue to the next step.
  6. Disconnect the USB cable from the Brother machine.
  7. Perform a factory reset of the printer.
The instruction of performing a factory reset varies depending on your Brother machine. Please refer to the User's Guide to perform a factory reset. The latest User's Guide is available on Manuals section.

    Note

If you perform the factory reset, the machine will be reset to its factory default setting. We recommend printing the machine's settings before performing the factory reset. Please refer to the User's Guide to print the machine's settings. The latest User's Guide is available on Manuals section.

  8. Reconnect the USB cable to the Brother machine to determine if the issue is resolved. If you still receive the error message, continue the next step.
  9. Connect the Brother machine to another computer to determine if the issue is with the Brother machine or the computer.
