This FAQ explains how to connect your Brother machine to a wireless capable computer without a WLAN access point/router (Ad-hoc mode).
Note
If you use this connection method (Ad-hoc mode), please note that the level of network security is lower and the network performance is slower than with a WLAN access point/router.

STEP I : Configure the Brother machine for Ad-hoc mode
Please follow the steps below to configure your Brother machine.
- Connect the AC power cord to your Brother machine and then connect it to an AC power outlet (electrical socket). Turn on your Brother machine.
- If you have previously configured the wireless settings of the machine, you must reset the network LAN settings before you can configure the wireless settings, again. Press Menu and choose Network or LAN => Network Reset or Factory Reset. Choose Reset and then choose Yes to accept the change. The machine will restart automatically. When the machine's display (hereinafter called LCD) returns to the date and time, wait about a minute for the LAN menu to become active, and then continue to the next step.
- Press Menu on the control panel.
- Choose Network or LAN => (WLAN) => (Setup WLAN) => Setup Wizard.
- If the message, WLAN Enable? or Change to WLAN? appears, choose On to accept. The wired network interface will become inactive with this setting.
If the message, Network I/F switched to Wireless appears, press OK to accept. The wired network interface will become inactive with this setting.
- The machine will search for network and display a list of available SSIDs.
Hint
It will take several seconds to display a list of available SSIDs.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose <New SSID>, then press OK.
- Enter the SSID name you like (up to 32 alphanumeric characters) and press OK.
Note
- The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is a unique identifier to avoid interference on a wireless network. We recommend that you do not use the name which can be identified (e.g. your name, office name) as the SSID because anyone can see it easily.
- Please record your SSID and Network key (WEP key) to be described in Step 12 to use them when configuring your computer for wireless network.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose Ad-hoc, then press OK.
- Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose None or WEP for Encryption Type and press OK.
Hint
Encryption methods:
- None: No encryption method is used.
- WEP: By using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), the data is transmitted and received with a secure key.
- If the LCD displays the key option KEY1, KEY2, KEY3, KEY4, choose the appropriate key number and press OK.
- Enter the WEP key you like (5 or 13 alphanumeric characters) and press OK.
- Choose Yes to apply your settings.
- Your machine will now try to connect to your wireless network using the information you have entered.
- When the LCD displays Connected, the wireless setup of your Brother machine is now complete.
- Press OK. (This step might be skipped in some models.)
At this point, the connection between your Brother machine and your computer has not been established. Please go to STEP II to connect the computer to your Brother machine.
