Title:
Change the Firewall settings (For Windows Vista® or earlier)

Description:

If a Firewall on your computer is active, it may be rejecting the necessary network connection needed for the network operations such as network printing, scanning or PC-Faxing. In this case, Brother recommends you either disable the Firewall on your computer whenever you use a network feature, or leave the Firewall enabled and adjust the settings. 




Step 1: Disable the Firewall settings:

For all Windows® users with personal Firewall Software:
(For example, Blackice™, Norton Internet Security™, Tiny Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm®, Sygate and McAfee®.)
For instructions on how to disable this type of program, please refer to the user's guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

For Windows® XP/ Windows Vista® users:
Make sure the Internal Connecting Firewall setting is not enabled on your computer.




*Windows Vista® users
  1.  Click the Start button -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Windows Firewall.
  2.  Click change settings.
  3.  When the User Account Control screen appears, do the following.

    • For Users who have administrator rights: Click Continue.

    • Users who do not have administrator rights: Enter the administrator password and click OK.

  4.  Click the General tab. Verify that Off (not recommended) is selected and click OK.

*Windows® XP SP2, 3 users

  1. Open Control Panel.


    With Classic View:
      Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.


    With Category View:
      Click Start -> Control Panel.

  2. Double click Windows Firewall.

  3. Click the General tab. Verify that Off (not recommended) is selected and click OK.

*Windows® XP SP1 users


  1. Open My Computer.

  2. Under Other Places on the left, right click on My Network Places, click Properties.

  3. Right click on Local Area Connection and click Properties.

  4. Click the Advanced tab. Under Internet Connection Firewall verify that the box next to Protect my computer... is unchecked. If the box is selected, click the box to remove the check. Then, click OK.

Note

If you disabled your Firewall, you will need to re-enable it after a network operation. For instructions on how to re-enable a Software Manufacturer Firewall, refer to your user's guide or contact the software manufacturer.

For Windows® XP/ Windows Vista® users, follow the instructions in Step 1 and replace the check in the box (Step iv for Windows® XP SP1 users) or select On (recommended) (Step iii for Windows® XP SP2, 3 users, Step iv for Windows Vista® users) to re-enable the Firewall.


 

Step 2: Leave the Firewall enabled and adjust the settings:



For all Windows® users with the personal Firewall Software:
(For example, Blackice™, Norton Internet Security™, Tiny Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm®, Sygate and McAfee®.)
For instructions on how to configure the settings properly for this type of program, please refer to the user's guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.



For Windows® XP/ Windows Vista® users:



*Windows Vista® users


  1. Click the Start button -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Windows Firewall.

  2. Click change settings.

  3. When the User Account Control screen appears, do the following.

    • For Users who have administrator rights: Click Continue.

    • Users who do not have administrator rights: Enter the administrator password and click OK.

  4. Click the General tab. Verify that On (recommended) is selected.

  5. Click the Exceptions tab and the Add port... button.

  6. To add port 54925 for Network Scanning, enter the information below:


    1. In Name: Enter any description, for example "Brother Scanner".
    2. In Port number: Enter "54925".
    3. Make sure UDP is selected.



    Then, click OK.

  7. To add port 54926 for Network PC-Fax, enter the information below:


    1. In Name: Enter any description, for example "Brother PC-Fax". 

    2. In Port number: Enter "54926". 

    3. Make sure UDP is selected. 

    Then, click OK.

  8. Make sure that the new setting is added and is checked, and then click OK.

  9. If you still have trouble with your network connection such as network scanning or printing, check the File and Printer Sharing box in the Exceptions tab and then click OK.

*Windows® XP SP2, 3 users


  1. Open Control Panel.


    With Classic View:
    Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.


    With Category View:
    Click Start -> Control Panel.

  2. Double click Windows Firewall.

  3. Click the General tab. Verify that On (recommended) is selected.

  4. Click the Advanced tab. Check the network type that the Brother machine is connected to if there is a list of choices then click the Settings... button. Continue to "Step v" of the following Windows® XP SP1 users instructions.

*Windows® XP SP1 users


  1. Open My Computer.

  2. Under Other Places on the left, right click on My Network Places, click Properties.

  3. Right click on Local Area Connection and click Properties.

  4. Click the Advanced tab. Make sure the box next to "protect my computer..." is checked and click the Settings... button at the bottom of the window.

  5. Click the Add button.

  6. Enter the information according to the steps below:

    Then, click OK.

  7. To add port 54925 for Network Scanning, enter the information below:

    Then, click OK.

  8. To add the port 54926 for Network PC-Fax, enter the information below:


    1. (Any description)
    2. localhost
    3. 54926
    4. 54926
    5. Select UDP

    Then, click OK.
