Windows® XP does not shut down and freezes at "Windows is shutting down". What can I do?

Description:

This problem can be solved by downloading a batch file that will update the Brother serial driver. Follow the instructions below to download the file and update the driver.


  1. Make a temporary folder on your desktop to save the downloaded self-extracting file.

    1. Right click on a blank area on your desktop, click NEW and then click FOLDER. A folder titled "New Folder" will appear on your desktop.
    2. To rename the new folder, right click the folder, click RENAME from the drop down options and type Brother.

  2. Click here to download the batch file. "File Download" will appear.
  3. Click Save. "Save as" will appear.
  4. Click Desktop, double click the Brother folder and then click Save.
    **If "Download Complete" appears, click Close.
  5. On your desktop, double click the Brother folder and locate the excutable file named 4800_9070(.exe may also appear at the end of the file name).
  6. Double click 4800_9070(.exe). "Zip Self-Decompression" will appear.
  7. Leave the file name in the window as is and click DECOMPRESS(X). "The decompression process was successful" will appear.
  8. Click OK.
Next, you will need to update the Brother driver by following the procedure below.

Updating the Brother Driver:
  1. Locate the "Windows" key on your keyboard. This is the key with the Windows Logo on it.
  1. Press the Windows key plus the E key on your keyboard to open "MY COMPUTER".
  2. Under "Folders" on the left, right click My Computer and then click Properties from the drop down options.
  3. Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.

  1. Click the "+" next to Ports(COM&LPT1).

  1. Right click Brother MFC-XXXX USB (XXXX is the model nunber of your Brother machine, ex. MFC-5100C) and then click Properties from the drop down options.

  1. Click the Driver tab and then click the Update Driver... button.

  1. Choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and then click Next.

  1. Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", then click Next.

  1. Click Have Disk.

  1. Click Browse...

  1. Locate the Brother folder on your Desktop, then click Open.

  1. Click OK.

  1. Click your model name to highlight in blue, then click Next.

  1. When the message regarding Windows Logo testing appears, click Continue Anyway .

  1. Click Finish .

  1. To confirm the update was successful, click the Driver Details... button on the Device tab.

  1. Confirm the file version for "BrSerWdm.sys" is 1.0.0.19.

  1. After confirming the file version, click OK to close the Properties window. Then proceed to close any other open windows from this process by clicking either "Close" or the X in the upper right corner of the window.

Your situation should now be resolved.
